PVA Supports The Opioid Task Force of Monroe County

Individuals, families, and communities throughout the United States are experiencing the effects of opioid addiction and overdose. The Surgeon General of the United States has identified opioid overdose and addiction as a public health crisis. Overdose deaths have reached epidemic proportion, doubling from 2010 to 2016.

The Surgeon General recently emphasized the importance of access to overdose-reversing medications, such as Naloxone (Narcan). Emergency services providers are on the ‘front lines’ of America’s struggle with opioid addiction; no area of our nation has escaped this epidemic. Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance stands ready to serve anyone within our community who needs assistance, through emergent access to overdose-reversing medications and treatment of life-threatening conditions associated with overdose.

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequence. For those who are addicted to opioids, an overdose may only be one of many episodes. PVA recognizes addiction as a disease which requires treatment through a combination of medication, counseling, and behavioral therapy. Patients and family members must accept overdose-reversing medications as an emergent life-saving measure, and not a treatment for addiction.

We are happy to share with you a resource developed and provided by the Opioid Task Force of Monroe County (also available in Spanish). Included is information on training and education, medical evaluations, and addiction services for patients and family members suffering from addiction. For more information, visit www.ncadd-ra.org.
